Herbert Paul Houghton

Pocatello

Herbert Paul Houghton, a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather passed away on September 6th, 2024, at the age of 85 from a heart attack.

He was born on April 11, 1939, in Ogden, Utah, to Herbert Houghton and Ella Marie Petersen Houghton. Herb (his family called him Butch) moved to Pocatello, Idaho, with his family at the age of 8 and called it home for the rest of his life. Herb married his loving wife, Darlene Joy Payn, on February 19, 1965, in Pocatello, and they were later sealed in the Idaho Falls Temple on November 19, 1966. Together, they shared a deep commitment to their family and faith. They were blessed with 4 children.

Herb proudly served in the Army from 1962 to 1963, completing summer camps in Utah, California, and Washington. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, holding various church callings, including Elders Quorum President, Cub Scout leader and Scout Master, and Ward Membership Clerk for 40 years. He was a dedicated Home Teacher/Minister for many years and loved and helped those he served. He also worked alongside his wife as an ordinance worker in the Idaho Falls Temple for six years. 

Professionally, Herb worked as a carpenter, At Zweigarts, meat packing plant, for 13 years, and spent 30 years as a carman for Union Pacific Railroad. In his free time, he enjoyed restoring cars, attending car shows, fishing, hunting, and spending time with family in Island Park. 

Herb was a jack-of-all-trades, known for his ability to fix almost anything. His love, dedication, and service to his family will be deeply missed. He was always happy and rarely got mad. He kept busy all day working on cars or in his garden, he loved being able to share his produce. 

Survived by his wife, Darlene; daughter, Joni Hill (Trenton) Roy, UT, son, Tracy Houghton (Sidnie) Idaho Falls, ID, son, Richard Houghton (Sandra) Lindon, UT, 16 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren, 1 brother, Glen Houghton (Maria) and 1 sister, Caroline Call. He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 sister, Evelyn Cobia, 1 brother, Jack Houghton and a son, Shawn Joseph Houghton Herb's legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched. 

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, September 14, 2024 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 550 W Cedar Street, Pocatello, ID.  Viewings will be from 6:00 - 8:00 pm on Friday, September 13, 2024 at Wilks Funeral Home, 211 W Chubbuck Road, Chubbuck, ID and at 10:00 am on Saturday at the Church.  Burial will follow at Restlawn Memorial Gardens, 2864 S 5th Avenue, Pocatello, ID.
