Grant "Doc" Phillips, 86 of Downey passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loved ones on May 2, 2015.
Grant was born August 11, 1928 in Downey, Idaho to William Edward and Alta Perkins Phillips. He was the 5th of 11 children. He attended school in Downey, Idaho.
At an early age, Doc joined the Merchant Marines and served for two years and then joined the Marine Corps where he served for another three years. Upon his return from the service, he worked on the farm with his Grandpa Ted for several years.
Grant married Lyn Christiansen and they had two sons. They were later divorced. He then married Wilma Vaughan Wigington and helped her raise her six children.
Papa was a very hard working man. He did a lot of construction and concrete work. He loved spending time in the outdoors: fishing, camping, and hunting. He really enjoyed riding horses and raising cows. Pa also loved to dance. More than anything, Pa enjoyed spending time with his family and his grandchildren. Papa was a very loving and caring man and an absolute joy to be around. He will be greatly missed by all.
Grant is survived by his children, Rocke (Vicky) Phillips, Grace, Idaho; Brad G. Phillips, Spokane, Washington; Bill (Kathy) Wigington, Chubbuck, Idaho; Jim (Lynn) Wigington, Inkom, Idaho; Sherri (Mitch) Overrocker, Pocatello, Idaho; Melanie (Mark) Ryder, Downey, Idaho; David (Rebecca) Wigington, Tremonton, Utah; Tawnie (Greg) Wright, Pocatello, Idaho; his sisters, Blanch (Emery) McConnell, Indianapolis, Indiana; Dorris (Nathel) Thomas, Springfield, Idaho; Jane (Glade) Davis, Downey, Idaho; Merlyn Anderson, Blackfoot, Idaho; and two brothers, Terry Phillips, Blackfoot, Idaho; Drew Phillips, Wendell, Idaho; 23 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.
Grant was preceded in death by his wife, Wilma; parents, William and Alta Phillips; four brothers, Keith, Dean, Don and Max Phillips; one grandson, Danuel Wigington; and two great-grandchildren, Brandon and Emily.
Funeral services for Grant will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, May 9, 2015 at Lava Hot Springs LDS Chapel, 437 W. Spring Street, Lava Hot Springs, with Bishop Lynn Stewart presiding. A viewing will be held 5-7:00 PM, Friday evening at Wilks Funeral Home, 211 W. Chubbuck Road; and one hour prior to the services at the church. Military Rites will follow the services at his interment at Lava Hot Springs Cemetery.
