Glen Stith Marshall

Glen Stith Marshall passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 10th, 2018, one month shy of his 94th birthday, in the home of his daughter, Ann Hronek in Heber, Utah. Glen was born July 16, 1924 in Wendell, Idaho to Griffin Harris and Emily Olive Robinson Marshall. His dad operated his own cattle and sheep ranch in the Burley area. Glen liked to claim that he was born in the sheep wagon, but actually, the wagon arrived at the hospital just in time.

Glen's family moved to California when he was 5. His last recollection of leaving Idaho was saying goodbye to his dog, Tippie, as he left him with the last table scraps and hoped the next renter would keep the dog. The family of seven drove to San Francisco in a black Model A four door sedan. While in San Francisco Glen became a real-life Newsie, selling newspapers on street corners to help support the family.

Glen's father tragically passed away when Glen was 11. His mother moved part of the family to her parent's dairy farm in Freedom, Wyoming. Glen learned how to milk cows, hitch wagons, harness and drive the teams, and worked hard at many other chores. His Star Valley experiences played a big part in molding his character. A short time later his family was reunited in Pocatello and lived on a small acreage on Hawthorne Road.

Glen graduated from Pocatello High School at the age of 16, where he played on the 1940 State Championship football team. He later served as a pilot in the Navy Air Force, flying off carriers in the Pacific until the end of WWII. During a flight exercise over Long Beach, CA, his F4U fighter lost power, crash landed in a field, and he was pulled from the burning wreckage. Glen was a successful boxer for the Navy and attended the University of Idaho on a boxing scholarship. He earned a Bachelor of Science from U of I.

Glen married Marga'Lee Hill in the Idaho Falls Temple in July, 1948. They raised four children and numerous dogs. During his early married years he raised and trained English Pointers, winning a number of field trials with his dog, Pete. Glen and his brother, Wendell built a successful real estate business, Marshall Brothers, developing numerous housing and commercial developments in Pocatello. He and several associates built the University Racquet Club. He was always up for a new entrepreneurial adventure, as he created and built a small chain of Mexican restaurants in southern Idaho. In the early 80's Glen contributed to the downtown Pocatello resurgence by developing Station Square in the old Fargo department store.

Glen had a true sense of adventure, loved traveling, skiing, fly fishing, spent some years as a ski instructor at Skyline Ski Area, and was an avid tennis player into his late 80s. Having developed a love of flying in the Navy, he logged many hours in small aircraft and sail planes. He even flew a hang glider. Once while returning from flight instrument certification, he made an emergency landing of a Cessna 182 during a storm on a Montana highway, saving himself and his traveling companion.

Glen was quiet and reserved on the surface, but anyone who knew him well was aware of his quick wit and great sense of humor. He was generous, had endless patience, and was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather (Papa). Glen was a member of the LDS faith. In 1959 he was called to serve as the first Bishop of the Idaho State University Institute Ward.

Glen is preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Marga' Lee, as well as his siblings, Griffin, Wendell, Donald, and June. He is survived by his children, Richard Marshall (Jan, South Pasadena, CA), John Marshall (Cindy, Pocatello, ID), Ann Hronek (Doug, Heber, UT), and Jane Marshall (Pocatello), 19 grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren.

Friends are invited to a Garden Memorial Open House in honor of Glen Marshall from 7:00 until 9:00 PM on Friday, July 13, 2018 at the home of John and Cindy Marshall, 480 Tewa Ave., Pocatello, ID.
