George Alexander Platt

d. May 2, 2016

George Alexander Platt passed away May 2, 2016 surrounded by his loving family. George was born June 17, 1943 to Bert and Charlotte Platt. He was a good child and a strong generous man with a strong sense of integrity and honesty. He possessed a very high IQ and was highly educated which gave him an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. In particular he enjoyed military history and strategy and had a love for cooking. He held several church positions in all our wards. George graduated from Antioch University and received his law degree from UC Berkley Boalt Hall. He practiced law for several years then accepted an offer for a challenging and rewarding position with the US Navy Office with the ICBM programs. With the world of Government Contractors being a small world, it wasnt long until Lockheed Martin came knocking on his door. They needed a Strategic Engineering Analyst. He joined the Fleet Ballistic Missile programs and had high profile positions if thats possible in classified programs. He worked there for several years and made many good friends that have stayed in close touch. He was also involved with the development of the Space Station and Hubble Telescope both of which are still flying and sending data. George had a wonderful career and rose to the top of every challenge. There are a few principles that stand out, values that our George gave us all: Theres no shame in not knowing something. The only shame is in continuing to be ignorant when you have a chance to learn the truth. Feel things deeply. Be moved by truth and beauty. Love knowledge and the act of learning for its own sake. Be interested in the world around you and let yourself be surprised by it. Tell the people around you how much you love them, and tell them often. Always be honest, especially with yourself. Being honest with yourself is often much harder than being honest with others. Be interested in people and in learning their stories. Do not discount the wisdom of people who are different from you. You never know whose story will open a new window onto the world. Our George is survived by his wife Marilynn, his daughter Julia and two step-sons, Richard and David Shuck, and one sister Georgeann (Bob) Gaston. He is preceded in death by his parents, a brother David (Georgia) Platt, a brother Frank (Marg) Platt, as well as one step-son, Michael Dean Shuck. Services were held Saturday, May 7 2016 at the Juniper Hills Church at 2:00pm. Interment was at the Wellsville City Cemetery in Wellsville, Utah. From Walt Whitman, one of his favorites: "Afoot and lighthearted, I take to the open road, Healthy, free, the world before me, The long brown path before me, leading wherever I choose. Henceforth, I whimper no more, postpone no more, need nothing. Henceforth, I ask not good fortune- I myself am good fortune; Strong and content, I travel the open road." Words cannot express the deep gratitude to the members of Juniper Hills LDS Ward as well as all the friends and neighbors who have shared blessings and tender mercies. The George Alexander Platt family.
