Gary Dean Clawson

Gary Dean Clawson, 84, passed away June 4, 2019 at the home of his daughter, Marcy Aiken, in West Jordan, Utah, where he has resided for the past three years. Gary was born in Pocatello, Idaho, May 31, 1935 to George C. Clawson and E. Viola Jensen. He had two older brothers, Jim and John, also a sister that died in infancy, Jeanene. He had a younger brother Jeddy and a younger sister, Julienne. Gary held many jobs, his first, a paper route; he delivered the papers on a Whizzer motor bicycle that he and his brother John shared! He later worked at a gas station pumping gas and selling auto parts. He was a car man apprentice at Union Pacific Railroad, worked for Bannock Cable, was an ambulance driver, sold sewing machines and insurance. He married Marjorie Denning in 1953 and together they had four children, Kayleen, Sue, Matthew and Marcene. He got his first teaching job in Nyssa, Oregon and taught choir for grades K-12. In 1968 he accepted a job with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and took his family to Tonga where he taught band at Liahona High School. Living in Tonga was a highlight of his life. He was called by President David O. McKay to translate the hymn book into Tongan which he did including a different notation system. Accomplishing this was a crowning highlight of his life. After returning from Tonga he became a realtor and later owned a brokerage, Landmark Real Estate, and did appraisals until his retirement. He and Marjorie divorced and he married Joan Barnhart in 1981, she had three children, Kathy, Jackie and Tom. This event added many grandchildren and great-grandchildren to his life; he leaves behind a great posterity. Gary loved playing the piano and singing, he enjoyed camping, especially in Island Park, and he was a good cook. He will be laid to rest next to his wife Joan, who passed away in January of 2018. His funeral will be held on Friday, June 7, 2019 at his ward chapel at 5156 Clay Hollow Ave. in West Jordan, Utah at 11:00 am. There will be a viewing prior to that from 9:30-10:30 am. He will be laid to rest the following day, Saturday, June 8, 2019 at Mountain View Cemetery, 1520 S. 5 th Ave. Pocatello, Idaho with a graveside service beginning at 2:00 pm.
