Floyd Delwin Farnsworth

Floyd Delwin Farnsworth, 90, passed away on Thursday, December 12, 2019. He was born August 4, 1929 in Sharon, Bear Lake, Idaho to Lewis Franklin Farnsworth and Rosetta Hansen Farnsworth. When Delwin was six years old he started spending his summers at his Hansen grandparents farm. He would ride the derrick horse to stack hay, and the few silver dollars his grandpa gave him at the end of the summer made him feel important. This started the work ethic that remained throughout his life. When he was 12 he got his Social Security card and worked at various jobs until he went to work for George Shiozawa on his farm at the age of 14 and continued working there until he was drafted into the Army in the fall of 1950 to serve in the Korean war, then again after he was honorably discharged in 1952. Delwin was in the 45 th infantry division, and was assigned to serve in the Communications/Radio platoon assigned to the Battalion Commander, so he never had to kill anyone, but was shelled a lot, and saw the carnage of war. He loved his country, was very patriotic, and proud to have served. After coming home, he had saved his money and bought an MG TD, an English sports car, which all the girls loved. Later he bought the first Porsche in the state of Idaho. Delwin was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. On March 9, 1953 he took Marjorie Sutcliffe home from church, and they dated from then on, becoming engaged on May 5 and married on August 1, 1953. He baptized Marjorie soon after and they both served in the church the rest of their lives, and especially loved serving in the Idaho Falls temple for over 7 years. After the army, Delwin worked for George Shiozawa for two years, before moving to Salt Lake City to run a service station, worked for Forde Johnson tires in Idaho Falls and Pocatello, then Firestone, and Intermountain Gas and Hood Corp. doing gas lines, and eventually working out of the Plumbers and Pipefitters Union Hall wherever the work took him, as a welder and fitter for the rest of his career. He was a foreman while working on building the American Falls Dam. After a five-bypass open heart surgery in 1992, Delwin decided to retire. They had moved into the home they built up Mink Creek in 1965, where they lived ever since. Delwin and Marjorie loved camping, hiking, biking, and canoeing, and went from tent, to tent camper, to a Motor Home in 1988. A year after his surgery, Delwin built a large shop, with woodworking tools on one side and Motor Home parking on the other. They travelled a lot of the country, and back to their honeymoon place at Lake Louise, Canada for their 25 th and 50 th anniversaries. Delwin loved doing things with his family, travelling, photography, reading, woodworking, and always striving to learn. He amazed his kids at how he learned to do things on the computer, his IPad, and IPhone. He loved history, both church and county, and had a deep testimony of the gospel. He was active and quite healthy until his 90 th birthday. Delwin and Marjorie had six children: Marla (Brian) Wells (both deceased), Sandra (Lynn) Watson, Alan C. (Lisa), Steven J. (Karen), Jeffery Taylor (deceased), and Scott D. (Lindsey); nine grandchildren, and fifteen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his two children, his parents, and three brothers: Lewis, Merion, and Ronald. He is survived by his wife and four children and three sisters-in-law. He will be greatly missed. A viewing will be held on Friday, December 20, 2019 from 6-8 pm at Colonial Funeral Home, 2005 S. 4 th Ave. Pocatello, ID. Funeral services will be on Saturday, December 21, 2019 at 11 am at the LDS Mink Creek Ward chapel, 8200 W. Portneuf Road Pocatello, ID, with a viewing for one hour prior to the services. Interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Gardens, 2864 S. 5 th Ave. Pocatello, ID.
