Elayne Bybee

Eva Elayne Bybee, 88, died on Friday, December 26, 2014, in Pocatello, Idaho, where she had been a resident since 1975. Elayne was born in Island Park, Idaho, the eldest child of James Tate and Elgie South. She grew up in Randolph, Utah, and moved to Idaho Falls, Idaho, after she graduated from high school. At South Rich High School, Elayne was valedictorian of her class. She took courses in journalism and science at Brigham Young University, Ricks College and Idaho State University. She took a special course in science news writing at Colorado State University. She met her future husband, "E" Warren Bybee, in Idaho Falls in 1939 when she was 13 years of age while visiting her grandmother. He was 16 years old and told her that if she stuck around, hed marry her. They were married on December 7, 1945, in Idaho Falls at her grandmothers house. The couple spent the first few months of their marriage in Island Park, at the Charles South sawmill, a few hundred yards from the cabin in which Elayne had been born. The marriage was later solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. They celebrated 60 years of marriage in 2005, just prior to Warrens death in December of that year. She was a tireless worker with a rich journalism background. At the age of 13 she started writing sports articles for the Rich County Reaper and contributed stories to the Salt Lake Tribune and Deseret News. For years she and her husband worked together to produce news stories and photography for the Deseret News, MovieTone News and magazines. In 2009 Elayne was recognized by the National Federation of Press Woman for being a member for 55 years. That organization also chose her in 2003, as one of the 27 women of the millennia who made a difference in news. Elayne was the first full-time woman news director for a major Idaho radio station KID in Idaho Falls. At the time she held that position she was one of three women listed in a CBS Radio News Affiliate report as news directors. When KID established a television station, she became the first woman TV news director for that facility. She spent 20 years of her career with the KID Broadcasting Company in Idaho Falls from 1955 to 1975. The last 16 years of her career she was a technical writer and business system specialist for Idaho Nuclear Energy Laboratory, retiring in 1995. She was also a freelance writer/photographer for more than 35 years. In 1975 she moved from Idaho Falls to Pocatello when her husband assumed his position as cinematographer for Idaho State University. Her love of poetry began in high school and she wrote multitudes of poems, even publishing a small book of her work titled, "Among Other Things." She wrote stories and wove actual events from her life or the antics of her children into those stories. She was an excellent artist and leaves many oil paintings for her family to share. She particularly loved to paint trees, barns, rivers and other scenery. She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held many positions of responsibility, most recently teaching temple preparation classes. She and her husband served as Temple Visitors Center guide missionaries for 21 summers from Memorial Day to Labor Day each year. They both served a mission to the Brigham Young University in Hawaii from 2002 to 2004. Elayne is survived by her children: Sanda Lee (Steve) McCallen, Mesa, AZ; Terry Wayne (Debbie) Bybee and James Warren Bybee, of Salt Lake City, Utah; Randall Wynn (Drurene) Bybee and Blair Wade Bybee of Pocatello. She has 13 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. Also surviving is her sister, Betty Norris Tremelling, Sandy, Utah. A viewing will be held at 1:00 pm prior to funeral services to be held at 2 pm on Friday, January 2, 2015, at the LDS Fairway chapel, 2000 S. Fairway, Pocatello, Idaho, with Bishop Rick Excell conducting. A viewing will be held from 6 to 7:30 pm on Thursday, January 1, 2015, at Colonial Funeral Home, 2005 S. 4 th Ave., Pocatello, ID. 208-233-1500.
