Edward passed away peacefully on May 5, 2015 at GatewayTransitional Care Center.
Ed was born March 25, 1931 in Preston, Idaho. He was the youngest and only son of Edward LeRoy and Loretta Wilson Maughan. He was raised in Preston, Idaho and graduated from Preston High School where he participated in football and played the trumpet in the band.
He began working for Mountain Bell right out of high school. Ed married Patricia Knudsen on June 26, 1950 in the Logan Temple. When it became inevitable that he would probably be drafted into the war, he enlisted in the Air Force where he served as a trainer in the communication field. He found great delight in training others how to climb poles and then nailing their climbing belts to the pole so they couldn't get down.
Bud and Pat's early married life was spent moving around to various states while he served in the Air Force. They lived in Texas where daughter, Kathleen, was born, Wyoming where son, Jerry Dean, was born and Georgia. He also served in Alaska leaving Patricia and Kathy behind living with Patricia's parents in Fairview, Idaho. After being discharged from the military, Bud and Pat moved to Pocatello to continue working for Mountain Bell. Their son, Lyle Gene, was born in Pocatello. With the exception of the years he served in the military he continued working for Mountain Bell in various positions retiring after 40 years of service where he made some valued and lasting friendships.
Throughout the years, Bud has enjoyed a variety of different hobbies. He enjoyed hunting with his family; fishing; camping; gardening; sharing produce from his garden with family and friends; woodworking making a variety of different things for himself and anyone else that would ask; he made six large cabinets and eight wall displays to hold the many, many Matchbox and Hot Wheel cars he collected over the years; stamp collecting; taking calendar pictures and making them into electronic puzzles for Pat; having his family over for picnics and croquet and starting water fights with his grandchildren. He will forever be remembered for his beautiful yard and the holiday displays he made to put in his front yard for everyone to enjoy.
Bud and Pat took part in a bowling league for many years and he was part of the Telephone Pioneers Club. He was a volunteer for the Police Department for several years. He also received many appreciation awards for the years of service he put into the Neighborhood Watch Program. He did a great job of implementing the program on his block and keeping the people informed and aware of what was going on.
Ed served as a Bishop, counselor in the bishopric, ward clerk and membership clerk in his ward for many years. He also was a membership clerk for the Central Stake up until his death.
Ed is survived by his wife of 65 years, Patricia and his children, Kathy (Roger) Sowell of Chubbuck, ID; Lyle (Paula) Maughan of Rigby, ID; Jill Hammond (Jerry Maughan) of Chandler AZ; He is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. He was proceeded in death by his son Jerry Dean Maughan, his parents LeRoy and Loretta Maughan and his sisters, Dorothy, Virginia, Lucille, and Mary Lou.
The family would like to thank the staff at Gateway Transitional Care Center and Access Hospice for their kind and loving care in Ed's behalf.
