Edward Ellis Fischler

November 8, 1940 — April 14, 2021

Edward Ellis Fischler passed away peacefully at home on April 14, 2021 with his wife Katie by his side.

Edward (Ed), was born in 1940 in Tillamook, Oregon. He was raised on a small dairy farm with two older brothers, Bill and Ben, and two younger sisters, Marlinda and Lorna. He had another younger sister, Sherilyn, who died as an infant. Ed graduated from Tillamook High School in 1959 and worked for an autobody shop in Portland, OR for a while, but in 1960 he joined the Air Force.

He was stationed at Wheeler Air Force Base in Hawaii. While in Hawaii he was set up on a blind date by his friend Tom. Tom didn't have a car and he needed a ride across the island to see his girlfriend. Ed was recruited to go on the date because he had a car. Ed went along, and on that blind date he met Katie Wharemate-Sadler, a college student from New Zealand who was studying at BYU Hawaii (then called the Church College of Hawaii). They had immediate chemistry they ended up marrying in 1965. Ed joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in 1964 before they were married.

They married and settled in Ed's hometown of Tillamook, Oregon where Ed worked at an autobody shop. However, he soon started working at Oregon State Parks and found he enjoyed working outside and he felt it was better for his health. He made a 30-year long career working for the Oregon State Park system which involved transfers to 8 different communities across the state. In 1970 a son, Mathew, was born and a daughter, Michelle, was born in 1972.

Ed enjoyed hunting with his parents and working on home improvement projects. He also continued doing autobody work on cars. Ed's favorite color was lavender, and he painted a number of cars purple and lavender. He always had a house or car project to work on. Ed loved reading, especially western novels. His favorite author was Louis L'amour.

Ed retired from the Oregon State Parks in 1996. After retiring he took up the hobby of bone carving with Maori designs, taking inspiration from Katie's culture and their travels to New Zealand. He sold his wares at the Saturday Market in Eugene, Oregon and gave away many pieces to friends and family.

After Katie retired in 2002, they both moved to New Zealand to Kaikohe, close to Katie's birthplace. After three years they learned from their daughter that a grandchild was on the way so they moved back to the United States. Ed's first and only grandchild, Edward Pak (also known as Eddie or Little Ed) was born in 2005.

Ed and Katie moved to Pocatello, Idaho to be closer to their grandson. Ed's heath began to deteriorate, and he endured kidney failure. He received a kidney transplant and was improving, but then he had a stroke in 2014. Through a lot of work and physical therapy, he regained some mobility and was able to share 6 more years with Katie. After his 80th birthday as it became more difficult to heal from various health issues, he made the decision to stop fighting. After three weeks in hospice he died peacefully at home with Katie by his side.

Ed was a good son, brother, and father, but most of all he was a devoted husband. Ed is survived by his wife Katie, after 55 years of marriage. He is also survived by his children Matthew Fischler and Michelle Pak (Josh) and his grandson Eddie Pak; and also, his sisters Marlinda Fischler Romaine and Lorna Fischler Grayson.

Ed is preceded in death by his father William Fischler, his mother Linda Hofmann Fischler, his brother William Fischler, his brother Benjamin Fischler, and his sister Sherilyn Fischler.

The family would like to thank all neighbors, friends and members of the Princeton Ward who have helped Ed and Katie after Ed's stroke. Ed left this world knowing he was loved and cherished.

A Funeral Service will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, April 20, 2021 at the Prinecton LDS Ward Chapel, 42 Princeton Ave, Pocatello, ID 83201 with a viewing a hour prior to the service at the church.
