Edward Allen Hughes, 86, passed away Friday, January 3rd, 2014 surrounded in love by his family. He was born on Thanksgiving Day November 24, 1927 to Edward Ross and Leona Grace Blackett Hughes in Springville Utah. Allen grew up and attended school in Spanish Fork Utah. In May of 1944, Allen enlisted in the Navy. He served at Farragut, Idaho for 10 weeks and then served on the following vessels: USS General Ernest, USS Sagittarius, and USS McCracken. He received an Honorable Discharge May 17, 1946. He reenlisted April 22, 1947 and remained on inactive duty until January 28, 1955. In 1946, Allen moved to Pocatello to begin his trade as a brick mason. He retired in 1990, after spending 43 years in the trade. He had a hand in building the Pocatello community. Some notable buildings he worked on are the Bannock Memorial Hospital, Reed Gym and the Bannock County Courthouse. He married the girl of his dreams, Charlotte Mullen on July 3rd, 1953 in Pocatello. They were later sealed in the Idaho Falls Temple on October 27, 1961. They were blessed with 6 beautiful children: Julie (Sam) Chaney, Parma ID; David, Pocatello; Karen (David) Sullivan, Phoenix AZ; Marianne (Brian) Richardson, Pocatello; Rob (Pam) Pocatello; Barbie (Dan) Stoddard, Pocatello. They have 19 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Allen was an active member of the LDS church serving in many callings. He is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, and a sister Bonnie Hales-Hardegen. He is preceded in death by his parents and 2 brothers, Leo Carl and Monte David. Services will be held Thursday, January 9th at 1:00 PM, Lakeview Chapel, 1440 Lakeview Dr, Pocatello ID. There will be visitation on Wednesday from 6-8 PM at Colonial Funeral Home, 2005 S 4th Pocatello and 1 hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow at Mountain View Cemetery with Military Honor by the Pocatello Veterans Honour Guard. Condolences for the family may be made online at www.Colonial-FuneralHome.com.
