Earshel "Jack" Newsom

After a long struggle with Parkinson's, Earshel "Jack" Newsom passed away at Brookdale Chubbuck, surrounded by his loved ones, on Wednesday, September 4, 2019.

He is survived by his wife, Jean Hofhine Newsom, his children, Kathy (Wade) Mooso, Jodi (Phillip) Williams, Julie (Scott) Stecklein, Kory (Jackie) Newsom and Amy (Richard) Porter, 14 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren, a sister Cindy (Dusty) Kiggins, and a brother Elmer Newsom.

Jack was born September 9, 1934 in Kentucky. His family moved from Kentucky to Pocatello on his 9th birthday. He started working at the age of 14 for Pacific Fruit Express. For the rest of his life, his example would teach his children the value of hard work. He worked at Guy M. Nielsen Company, Farm Bureau, Garrett's, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and many, many construction jobs. He was a Master Ceramic Tile Setter and laid tile in numerous homes, churches, and businesses throughout the state of Idaho. It was always a challenge to keep up with him.

He and the love of his life, Jean Newsom were married on July 13, 1956. That marriage was later solemnized in the Idaho Falls Temple on November 13, 1960.

Jack was a faithful member of the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints where he served as Scout Master, Elders Quorum President, Activities Director, and Sunday School Teacher. He was also a counselor to three different bishops and member of the High Council. He loved to help others and gave endless hours of service to many, always showing his generosity. Even after Parkinson's robbed him of his ability to walk or talk, he continued to share his generous spirit through his wonderful smile.

Jack was always ready for an adventure. He was the life of the party at family reunions and the first to jump in for camping, long drives with Mom, canoeing, water-skiing, square-dancing, motorcycle riding, or floating the Salmon River. He was always up for riding the wildest of rides with his children and grandchildren at Lagoon, Six Flags, and Disneyland. His family will never forget his homemade root beer and sourdough hotcakes.

He was preceded in death by his daughter Debbie Lynn Newsom, grandson Tyler Williams, parents Myra & Greenberry Newsom, 5 brothers and 4 sisters, and multiple nieces and nephews.

He was loved and will be missed by so many. Our family wants to extend our deep heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Brookdale Chubbuck, Heritage Home Health and Hospice for the tender-loving care you showed to our husband, father, and grandfather during the time he was under your care.

Services will be under the direction of Wilks Funeral Home. Family will receive friends and relatives at a viewing Sunday, September 8, 2019, 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Wilks Funeral Home, 211 W. Chubbuck Road, Chubbuck, ID 83202. Funeral services will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, located at 4010 Hawthorne Road (Quinn & Hawthorne) Pocatello, ID on Monday, September 9, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. with a viewing held from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. prior to the services.
