Dorthy Jean Kinney

Dorthy Jean Hammett Kinney, 93, passed away from the Corona Virus at her home on Tuesday, October 6, 2020 in Pocatello, ID. Dorthy was born in Henryetta, Oklahoma on September 29, 1927 to James Mercus Hammett and Cora Viora "Ola" Mandana Boone Cypert Hammett. After two boys, Cranford Huston and Clovis Junior, James and Ola were delighted to have a girl. Dorthy was always trying to keep up with her older brothers showing them she could do anything the boys could do. She was no sissy! Growing up, Dorthy lived simply and happily, proudly wearing handmade dresses from her mother, Ola. They moved from Tellaquah, to Seminole, then settling finally in Oklahoma City where her family produced rodeos and where Dorthy was in the 4H club for the Cherokee County. She received ribbons for canning, cooking and sewing. While in high school, Dorthy was active in drama, playing Peaches in Girl Shy, and sports, competing on an all-girls baseball team. Dorthy also enjoyed watching sports and was an avid OU (Oklahoma University) fan! Dorthy graduated from Cooked Oak High School on May 22, 1946 with thirty classmates. Over the years, she kept in touch with her classmates and talked fondly of them. Dorthy met her sweetheart Donald Max Kinney in 1945 when he was stationed at the Naval Air Force Base in Norman, Oklahoma. The two married on February 18, 1946 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, however, James and Ola were not ready for their only daughter to leave home just yet. The marriage was annulled February 20, 1946. Dorthy and Don kept in contact by writing letters back and forth to one another. Don finally caught up with Dorthy and they were married on April 30, 1952 in Modesto, California and moved to Pocatello, Idaho to Dons home town to settle down. Together they welcomed three girls, Cora Ann Bohi, Clovis Jean Carlson, and Janet Lea Kron; The Kinney Girls were the light of their lives. Dorthy and Don were well known for always having an open home to anyone who needed a hot meal or a warm coat for the winter. No matter who you were you were family. Don and Dorthy were married for 46 years. Dorthy enjoyed working many jobs including JCPennys, Singer Sewing machines, and finally settling into real estate. She loved selling houses helping families find their forever homes. She finally retired in her 80s. Dorthy was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She loved attending church and meeting up with her church members. Dorthy is survived by her daughter Cora Ann (Jerry) Bohi, St. George, UT., Grandson Bo (Shelbee) Hunt, St. George, UT. Granddaughter Shasta Hunt, Midvale, UT. Son-in-law Garth Carlson, Grandsons Jon and Mathew Carlson, Pocatello, ID. Daughter Janet (Kenny) Kron, Post Falls, ID. Granddaughter Chelsi (Derek) Barnard, Pocatello, ID. Grandson Brandon (Kaylee) Kron, Post Falls, ID, and her Great Grand Children Jade Finch, Ann, Jewell & Vivian Hunt and Henry Kron. Dorthy was preceded in death by her parents James and Ola Hammett, her brothers Cranford and Clovis Junior Hammett, husband Donald Max Kinney and her daughter Clovis Jean Kinney Carlson. In lieu of flowers, family has asked for charitable donations in honor of Dorthy to be donated to the charity of your choice in her name. Dorthys family would like to thank Caring Hearts Assisted Living Center and Encompass Home Health & Hospice for their loving care and compassion. A private family service will be held at the Mountain View Cemetery on Saturday, October 10, 2020.The family has plans to do a celebration of life at a later date. Dedication of the grave will be performed by grandson, Bo Hunt.
