Dorothy Kerr

d. January 12, 2016

Dorothy Kerr, 93, died peacefully on January 12, 2016 in Pocatello, Idaho. Born in Fort Smith, Arkansas on April 6, 1922 to Earl Rush and Lily Ann Bass, Dorothy was recognized at an early age as a highly gifted musical student. By her sophomore year in high school, she was a much sought after soprano who sang statewide at both social and religious functions. After graduating from Fort Smith High School in 1940, she studied at Kansas State Teachers College and taught voice and piano. During WWII Dorothy worked as a medical secretary at Camp Chaffee, where she met First Lieutenant John Estabrook "Brooks" Kerr of Grundy Center, Iowa. They married in 1946 and lived briefly in Iowa while Brooks completed his degree. In 1948 they moved to Kankakee, Illinois, where Brooks began a 30-year career with General Mills. Though General Mills relocated them to New York and Minneapolis in the ensuing years, in 1971 they returned to Kankakee, the city they always considered home. In 2011 they moved to the Gables Assisted Living Center in Pocatello to be near their son John and his family. Dorothy was a busy homemaker who enjoyed sharing her artistic abilities and interests with the community in which she lived. Her voice graced many church events throughout the years. An avid gardener, she was long a member of Kankakee Kultivators and served as their president for two years. An adventurous traveler, Dorothy enjoyed camera safaris in Kenya and visits to Israel, Europe and Haiti. Dorothy is survived by her children, Ann Barrow and John Kerr, their spouses Michael Barrow and Caroline Kerr, and their four children, John Andrew and Lauren Barrow, and Kristen and Daniel Kerr. Her family wishes to express heartfelt gratitude to the Gables, Gateway Care Center and Heritage Hospice for their loving care during Dorothys late years. Services will be held on Wednesday, January 20, 2016 at 1 pm at Colonial Funeral Home 2005 S. 4th Ave. Pocatello, Idaho 83201, 208-233-1500, with a gathering from 12-1 pm before services at Colonial. Burial will follow at Mountain View Cemetery 1520 S. 5th Ave. Pocatello, Idaho 83204.
