Dorothy Jean Scherbel

November 14, 1933 — June 23, 2018

DOROTHY JEAN PAIGE SCHERBEL November 14, 1933 to June 23, 2018 Dorothy Jean Paige was born in Pocatello on November 14, 1933 to Howard Reynold and Lillian Matilda Bier Paige. She grew up in a house on the corner of 14 th & Lewis, the youngest of six children. She loved school and attended Washington Grade School, Franklin Junior High School, and graduated from Pocatello High School in 1951. When she was 16 years old, Gordon saw her working at the theater and told his friends, "I'm going to marry that girl." They were introduced by a mutual friend, and they picked her up after work and went to get a burger at Fred & Kelly's. Gordon, who was 20 years old, asked her to go out with him, but he traded cars first so he would have a nice car to take her in. He took her for a milkshake in American Falls. He drove by with family to show them the girl he would marry. They dated and Gordon asked her to marry him, but Dorothy said she was too young and not ready to settle down or give up other boys. She also didn't want her mother to lose her Dad's pension. Gordon kept pursuing her and bought her gifts. She finally accepted his proposal just before graduation. She married Gordon Henry Scherbel on April 15, 1953. They were later sealed in the Idaho Falls Temple on April 2, 1958. They had 3 sons and 1 daughter. She worked at Steve's Bowling Alley and the Rialto Theatre. She had beautiful legs and was a live model of nylon stockings in the window of Montgomery Ward with her sister Delores. She also worked at Nabisco Biscuit Company, until she devoted her life to raising children and homemaking. She was the best mother ever and taught her children well, to work, respect others, and help wherever needed, and to love church. When Mark said something she may not have agreed with, she always said, "I taught him right, he just didn't listen." When Chelane was young, she wanted a raw birthday cake (just batter), and that is what Dorothy made for her. She absolutely loved Christmas and the decorations, and her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren always looked forward to her birthday cards covered inside and out and on the envelopes with stickers. Dorothy enjoyed sewing and made most of her family's clothes herself. She loved all types of stitchery and crafts, and her plaques were sold at Hatch's gift shop. She was a great cook, her family always had delicious meals, and she was known for her divinity, orange salad, goulash, boiled raisin cake, and her pies. She always liked traveling and going for rides, and spending time and having "water therapy" at their cabin at Blackfoot Reservoir. She collected dolls and loved flowers, decorating, and all things lacy, sparkly, and that lit up or chimed. She kept a very clean and beautiful home and cabin, and her children were always clean. Dorothy was an active member of the LDS church, taught Sunday School for 26 years, was a Den Mother for years, and later performed sealings with Gordon at the Temple for enough people to fill the new Conference Center twice. She had a lifelong penpal (Lorraine from Cambridge, Massachusetts) since 5 th grade. She was very generous and gave money every month to many various charities. She is survived by her children, Randy Scherbel, Chelane (Mrs. Carl) Meek, and Rick (Karen) Scherbel, all of Bountiful, Utah, and Mark (Stephanie) Scherbel of Pocatello, Idaho; 15 grandchildren and 44 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Gordon (2004), her parents, her sisters Louise Hatch, Delores Freckleton, and Norma Bauer, her brothers Earl and Harold Paige, and her granddaughter Catherine Meek Moss. Funeral services will be Tuesday, June 26, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. in the Gwen LDS Ward, 1433 Gwen Drive, Pocatello . The family will receive friends from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. in the Church.
