Doreen Nelson

d. October 26, 2015

Our beloved Doreen "Grandma Newt" Nelson, 84, of Chubbuck, ID, peacefully passed away from natural causes on October 26, 2015 in Pocatello. She was born in March 1931, at the home of her maternal grandparents near Red Rock Pass, south of Downey Idaho. She was the oldest of four children born to Richard and Sarah "Ivy" Woodland. At a young age, the family moved to the Inkom, Idaho area, where Doreen grew up, attending school in Inkom, and graduating from Inkom High School in 1949. That same year she met and married Nylan "Newt" Nelson, and they spent their married life living in Pocatello. Doreen and her family were sealed in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple in July 1966. They celebrated their 53 rd anniversary before Newt passed away in 2003. Doreen and Newt had five children, Karen (Dan) Nuckols, Idaho Falls, Kirk (Barbara), Riverside, Rick (Cindy), Erda, Utah, Larry, Chubbuck, and Kristine (deceased in 2007). Doreen worked several jobs in her early married years, but was primarily a stay at home mom, until her children were raised. She then managed the King's Food Host Restaurant for several years, before becoming the cafeteria manager at AMI for many years, retiring at age 65. After retirement, she was pleased to travel with Newt, and a group of surviving veteran Marine Corps buddies and their wives, to Iwo Jima in the Pacific to commemorate the 50 th anniversary of the WWII battle in which he fought. Doreen was active in the LDS church throughout her life, having served in many capacities in the Primary and Relief Society. She enjoyed attending the temple, family history, quilting, crocheting and sewing. However, her special talent was being an excellent cook. She made the best lasagna, cinnamon rolls, banana bread and pies of anyone we knew. She enjoyed sharing her treats with family, friends and neighbors. Doreen's children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her greatest joy. She has a deep love of her Savior. Doreen was preceded in death by her husband; daughter; parents; and a younger sister, Olive Hawkley. She is survived by her four children; 10 grandchildren, Brian, Matt, Marcus, Alyce, Craig, Tony, Rachel, Taysha, Tianna, Jessica; 12 great-grandchildren; a brother, Dee Woodland, Pocatello; and sister, Gayla Corminay, Denver. The family would like to thank staff at Portneuf Medical, Quinn Meadows Rehab Center and Alliance Home Health for their kindness. Funeral services, with Bishop Robert Briscoe officiating, will be held on Saturday, October 31, 2015 at 11 am at the LDS Canterbury Ward, 4890 Whitaker Rd, Chubbuck, ID 83202 , with a viewing for one hour prior to the service. Family will meet with friends on Friday, October 30, 2015 from 6-8 pm at Colonial Funeral Home 2005 S. 4 th Ave. Pocatello, Idaho 83201, 208-233-1500. Interment will take place, later Saturday afternoon, at the Treasureton Cemetery, 9542 Treasureton Rd. (10 miles north of Preston) Preston, Idaho 83263.
