Donald Lewis Hazlett, Jr.

June 8, 1954 — February 28, 2010

Donald Lewis Hazlett, Jr., 55, of Pocatello, ID passed away Sunday, February 28, 2010 at a local care facility after an extended illness.
Don was born on June 8, 1954 at Fort Dix, NJ to Donald and Betty Hazlett, the first of four children. As the son of a Marine, Don grew up in North Carolina, Georgia and Pennsylvania. He had fond memories of vacations and activities with his family. When he was six years old, Don's family met missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the Hazletts were baptized soon after. This was the beginning of a lifetime of faith and service.
When Don was nineteen, he left North Carolina and came west to serve for two years as a missionary in the Idaho Pocatello mission. He later returned to the west where he attended Brigham Young University in Provo, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Training and Development.
It was at BYU where he met his wife, Ramona Hayden, in a Family Home Evening group. Ramona remembers being impressed with how kind Don always was to his sister and how much he loved his family. Ramona and Don were sealed for eternity on March 28, 1980 in the Idaho Falls temple. Their joy grew as three children, a son and two daughters, joined the family in the following years.
The Hazlett's lived for a short time in Provo, UT while Don finished school and then moved briefly to Denver, CO before returning home to Pocatello, ID. Here, Don worked at Farmers Insurance and then Farm Bureau as an underwriter.
Don was devoted to his service in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and especially loved the many years he spent serving in the Young Men's program and as a leader in the Boy Scouts of America.
Don loved family time, whether it was being at home together, participating in his children's activities or vacationing together, especially in Yellowstone Park. He also enjoyed golf and camping with his family.
His family and friends remember Don most for his quiet kindness, integrity, and humility. His mother-in-law always said he was like Nathaniel, a man without guile. He also had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to laugh.
Don is survived by his wife of thirty years, Ramona; his son Benjamin (Mary) Hazlett, Meridian, ID; his daughter Crystal (Scott) Stephens, Provo, UT; his daughter Kirsten (Brandon) Johnson, Pocatello, ID; his grandson, Benson Don Hazlett; his sister Vicki (Mark) Landon, Idaho Falls, ID; his brother Steve (Nicki) Hazlett, Moab, UT; and many wonderful in-laws, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Don and Betty, and a brother, Richard.
The family would like to especially thank the staff of Pocatello Care and Rehab for caring so tenderly for Don and for helping him finish his life in dignity, and to Dr. Gilbert and Dr. Kennedy for their caring service over the years.
