Dennis Clarence Hanners

Dennis Clarence Hanners, 70, passed away surrounded by loved ones on Wednesday, March 4, 2009 at his home in Chubbuck after a long, courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Pocatello on January 13, 1939 to Clarence Alfred and Emma Josephine Anderjaska Hanners. He attended Pocatello schools and graduated from Pocatello High School in 1958.

He married Gloria J. Rytting on December 16, 1966 in Pocatello. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Idaho Falls temple. They were blessed with a son Darrell R. Hanners. Dennis was a hard worker from a young age, helping his parents with dairy cows, chickens and gardening. He loved working in the soil and growing plants. He belonged to the Future Farmers of America while in high school. He served in the National Guard for 8 ½ years. He started working at Union Pacific Railraod while still in high school, working full time at night calling crews and attending school in the day. He worked as time keeper at the railroad for many years and then worked as a Carman Welder until his retirement. He retired from the railroad after 43 years of service in 1999.

Dennis enjoyed the outdoors. He loved working in his yard and growing things in the garden. He also enjoyed many hours of fishing, hunting, camping, boating, four-wheeling, snow machining, skiing, golfing, riding horses and playing cards with friends. He had horses for many years and enjoyed enjoyed being in the mountains with them. He and Gloria loved to square dance and were members of the Choo Choo Square Dance Club for many, many years and have been blessed with many wonderful friends and cherished memories from dancing.

Dennis is survived by; his eternal companion Gloria; son, Darrell Hanners; brother, Donald E. Hanners and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death his parents and brothers Keith and Dean.

The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to Creekside Hospice for their loving care of Dennis and many thanks to the Hope Cancer Group at Portneuf Medical Center for helping him through some difficult days. Also our thanks to the doctors and nurses at the Portneuf Cancer Center. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in his name to the Hope Cancer Group of Portneuf Medical Center.
