Dean Barney

Dean Barney, 85, passed away on Saturday, February 29, 2020 peacefully at The Gables Assisted Living Center in Idaho Falls, Idaho. He was surrounded by his loving family. On January 20, 1935, twin boys, Dean and Don were born to Esther May and Moses Allen Barney. He was the 7th born of 11 children. Don was 2 minutes younger and passed away at 39 days old of Whooping Cough. Dean grew up West of Rexburg until about the age of 12 when they moved to Hibbard, Idaho. He learned the value of hard work on a farm. He graduated from Madison High School in 1953. He went to a semester of Ricks College and was on the Boxing Team. While boxing, he never lost a fight and was asked to go pro. He went on a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints instead and never regretted his decision to serve the Lord. He was called to the Southern States Mission which took in Georgia, Alabama, Florida and South Carolina from 1957-1959. A month after returning from the mission field, he was drafted in the U.S. Army and spent 13 months in Korea. In the Army, he was chief computer of the mortar squad. When his service time was up, he went back to college at Ricks where he met his first spouse, Karen Haack. They were married for 4 years when she passed away from a brain hemorrhage due to Diabetes. It was at an LDS Fireside where he met the love of his life, Bonnie Jean Larson. They were later sealed in the Idaho Falls Temple. This union blessed them with 4 children, 9 grandchildren, 1 great-granddaughter and a great-grandson on the way; due in May 2020. Dean was a hard-working salesman and provided well for his family. He received many awards for being top in sales by the companies he worked for. Some of which he won trips to London, the Caribbean, Acapulco, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. As an active member of the LDS church, he served in many callings which include Sunday School President, Elders Quorum President, High Priest Group Leader, and Gospel Doctrine Teacher; which he loved. Dean enjoyed hunting and fishing, boating and waterskiing and reading. He loved Snickers, root beer barrels, boiled raisin cake, spice cake, carrot cake, oatmeal cookies and brownies. Dean is survived by his children, Blake Thornton, Bart (Shaun) Barney, Samee (Jeremy) Beck; 9 grandchildren, Amanda Thornton, Kyle Thornton, Josh Thornton, Zachary Thornton, Isabelle Thornton, Olivia Thornton, Jaiten Beck, Ryker Beck and Zerik Beck; 1 great-granddaughter, Mara; and sisters, Letha Dawson and June Gould. He was preceded in death by his parents, Esther May and Moses Allen Barney; brothers, Charles, Robert Carl, Dell Barney, Reed, Don and Wayne; sisters, Vera Yatsak, and Ruth Orr; his first spouse, Karen Haack; his second spouse, Bonnie Jean Barney; and son, Brek Thornton. The family would like to thank Encompass Hospice and The Gables Nursing staff for their loving care. Dean had a sweet way of making people laugh by his words of advice and cute sayings and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 6, 2020 at 11 am at the LDS church, 655 S. Grant St. Pocatello, Idaho, with a viewing one hour prior to services. Interment, with Military Honors, will follow at the Inkom Cemetery.
