David R. Walker

d. March 30, 2012

David Raymond Walker, 58, of Pocatello passed away on March 30, 2012. David was born on September 1, 1957 to Raymond and Elvilah Jensen Walker of Pocatello. He graduated from Pocatello High School in 1971 where he began to show his great abilities as an athlete. He participated on Pocatello High's track and cross country teams. Dave's athletic skills would earn him numerous awards and take him to great places. He ran the Boston Marathon finishing in 3:41. His best marathon finish was in Pocatello where he crossed the line at 3:05! Dave's athletic skills were hard to match in biking, skiing, running, and most recently in kayaking. If you didn't know Dave personally, you could recognize him from the crazy bandanas he wore running, or from the distinct ringtones on his phone. On a ski hill, doing what he loved, he met the love of his life, and another great athlete, Jan Carpenter. They teased each other that it was downhill from there! Dave and Jan married on January 12, 2001. They made their home in Pocatello. Together they shared a love of biking, running, skiing, and everything in the great outdoors. Dave was very involved with family and enjoyed spending time with them. He graduated from VOTECH at Idaho State University, worked for years at the INL site, and then at Barrie's Ski and Sports in Pocatello. Dave attended the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He is survived by his wife, Jan, of Pocatello, Idaho, sons, Jason (Kirsten) Walker, Bellingham, Washington, and Kyle Walker of Salt Lake City, UT; and his daughters, Johanna (Danny) Leavitt of Pocatello, Idaho, Corrine (Kevin) Bell of Eugene, Oregon, a brother, Jerald Walker of Ammon, Idaho, a sister, Lois Harrison of Pocatello, Idaho, and eight wonderful grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Afton Dykman. Funeral services for Dave will be held, Friday, April 6, 2012 at 11 A.M. at the LDS Chapel located at 2925 Michelle Street, Pocatello, Idaho 83201, with Bishop Kent A. Higgins conducting. The family will receive friends on Thursday, April 5 from 6 P.M to 8 P.M. at the Colonial Funeral Home located at 2005 South 4th Ave, Pocatello, Idaho, 83201, and on Friday at the church from 10 A.M to 10:30 A. M. just prior to the services. Burial will follow at Mountain View Cemetery. For those friends who would like to join Dave for his last ride, please bring your clothing and bikes and follow Dave from the church to the cemetery. Transportation for bikes and riders will be provided at the the cemetery to take cyclists back to the church. In lieu of flowers, the Dave Walker Memorial Fund has been established at Zion's Bank.
