Darel Alfonzo Ashbaker, 88, passed away peacefully on March 31, 2018, surrounded by family and friends. Darel was born on March 21, 1930 in Grace, Idaho, the third of four children to Alfonzo and Edna Trappett Ashbaker. He had three sisters, Peggy, Norma and Elaine. Darel was educated in Grace, ID and Pocatello, ID and graduated from Pocatello High School. Darel was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Darel married Helene Pugmire and together they had two children, Alan and Sandy. In that union Darel became the step-father to Doreen Bringhurst. Darel and Helene later divorced. Darel then married Marie Adams and became the step-father to seven additional children. Darel was a heavy equipment operator for the Union Pacific Railroad for 47 years, retiring in 1989. He enjoyed sharing stories about his work experiences and about his co-workers. He enjoyed spending time camping, hunting, fishing, doing puzzles, an occasional gambling trip to Nevada and his Ford trucks. Darel is survived by his daughter, Sandy Ashbaker, Pocatello; his sister, Elaine Highland, Pocatello; his step-children, Doreen Gehrke, UT, Jim Adams, WA, Larry Adams, AK, Marsha Wilson, ID, Sandy McConkey, KY, Carol Cunningham, ID, Janet Boos, NE, Eadie Scoggin, Pocatello, and by their spouses. He is survived by several grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. He is also survived by special friends, Jeff Corrington, Pocatello and Debbie Kunz, WA. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters and their spouses, Peggy (Elmer) Hatch & Norma (Richard) Lee; son, Alan; former wife, Helene; and wife, Marie. Thank you to Darels caregivers, especially the doctors and staff members of Quinn Meadows, Quail Ridge, Heritage Home Health & Portneuf Medical Center Wound Care, PMC Emergency Room & ICU. A Graveside Memorial Service will be held on Friday, June 8, 2018 at 1:00 P.M. at Restlawn Memorial Gardens, 2864 S. 5 th Ave. Pocatello, ID 83204. Please dress comfortably and wear blue in honor of it being Darels favorite color.
