Corwin "Corky" Ames

Corwin "Corky" Richard Ames passed away at a local care facility peacefully early Saturday morning, Feb. 18, 2017. He was 80. Corky was born to Melvin and Ruby Ames in Cleveland, ID on October 25, 1936. He grew up on the Ames Poultry farm (MelRu Eggs) just off Johnny Creek Rd. He attended Pocatello High School, where he met his future wife; Rosemary Curtis. They left school early and started a life together. At 17, and with his fathers written consent, he joined the United States Air Force. His family grew to include 4 daughters as they moved where assigned: Texas, Arizona, Washington, England, California and Idaho. Corky worked his way up in rank over the years to Senior Master Sergeant. Highly regarded for his exacting approach to fixing and maintaining aircraft in both peace and war, he earned his fair share of commendations and medals. He spent 26 years faithfully serving his country. After retiring, Corky spent much of his time pursuing his many hobbies. He was an avid fisherman -- the crowning jewel of his catches being a sailfish off the coast of Mexico in 2003. His main hobby was playing pool. He won awards for 8-ball breaks, countless table runs, and a great many 1st place trophies, both for the team and himself. Corky was a crack shot, considered among the best in the city, even the state and region. He never bragged or boasted; he enjoyed the discipline of the game and the fun of spending time with friends, family, and his wife, Rosemary. He also enjoyed spending time with family playing cribbage or cards, taking command of the barbecue grill, maintaining a flawless lawn and garden, helping family and friends with repair and building projects, and treating grandchildren to breakfast on their birthdays. He is survived by two brothers, Dan Ames (Bonnie) of Chubbuck, ID and Larry Ames (LaRae) of Pocatello, ID; four daughters, Marie Ames of Kearns, UT, Lisa Rivera-Ames of Fairfield, CA, Cory Dyer (Tim) of Yucca Valley, CA, and Mary Cole (Joseph) of Pocatello, ID; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren (with more on the way) and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; and a step-father, Don Hatten; a sister, June, a brother, Cecil; two nieces, Marsha and Lee Ann; two nephews, Danny and Rick; and his wife of over 62 years, Rosemary. His family would like to thank Mary Cole for being Corky's guardian/conservator. They also thank the caring and compassionate staff of The Gables of Pocatello and Encompass Home Health and Hospice, who were there for him until the end, and Jared Clinger and the staff of Colonial Funeral Home for their support. A viewing will be held on Sunday, February 26, 2017 from 4-6 pm at Colonial Funeral Home, 2005 S. 4 th Ave. Pocatello, ID 83201. Funeral services will be on Monday, February 27, 2017 at 12 noon at Colonial Funeral Home with a viewing for one hour prior to the services at the funeral home. Burial, with Military Honors, will follow at Restlawn Memorial Gardens, 2864 S. 5 th Ave. Pocatello, ID 83204.
