Darwin Charles "Charlie" Smith, 79, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 13, 2018 in Pocatello, Idaho Charlie was born to Wiley Joseph Smith and Loreta Ellen Palmer on December 30, 1938 in Pocatello, where he was raised.
He joined the United States Navy in 1958 and then in 1961 he married Marietta Rita Wood and together they had five children. He served as a motorcycle police officer in Escondido, California. He moved from California back to Pocatello in 1970 where he became known as the Pocatello Gorilla. He worked for Satterfield Real Estate Company and started his own cleaning business. He divorced in 1978 and shortly after moved to Stanley, Idaho and became a river guide. In 2005 he returned to Pocatello where he resided until his passing.
Charlie was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Bannock County Posse, California Police Department Motorcycle drill team, as well as a member of the Pocatello Parks and Recreation and the All Under One Roof Organization.
Charlie enjoyed carving, skiing, hunting, fishing, bicycling, motorcycles, horseback riding, animals and poetry.
He is survived by his children; Gregory "Smitty" Smith of Pocatello; Juanita (James) Bryant of Butte, MT; Barry (Sherri) Smith of Pocatello; Wiley (Mary Ann) Smith of Boise; Rita Marie (Daniel) Chavez of Pocatello; 18 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
Charlie was preceded in death by; his mother and father; brother, Ron Smith; sister, Ruby Janson; and son, Darwin Scott Smith.
The family would like to offer a special thank you to the Portneuf Medical Group and Dr. Gonzales for taking such good care of our dad. We would also like to thank the Care Connection of Idaho, Meals on Wheels and his VA nurse Kellie.
Funeral services for Charlie will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 18, 2018 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 135 S. 7th Avenue in Pocatello. A viewing will be held one hour prior to services at the church. Interment will follow services in the Mountain View Cemetery.
