Charles W. Lewis was reunited with Jesus at age 90 on Wednesday, April 13, 2022, at home with his wife by his side. He was born June 26, 1931 to Claud and Elsie May Hidlebaugh Lewis in Scranton, Iowa. He was the 4th of 10 children.
Chuck was a hard worker from very young age when worked for neighboring farmers. He also liked spending time in various machine shops where he could build things. At age 11 he built his own scooter that he would ride clear up until he went into the army! Chuck spent 13 years serving in the army. His service covered the end of WWII, The Korean War, and The Vietnam War. He spent 6 years in Germany and traveled to 23 countries, working in jobs from cooking/baking to becoming a nuclear weapons technician, attaining the rank of Sergeant 1st Class.
After his time of service, during which his first marriage had ended, he ended up in Dinosaur, Colorado working for Van Gas. He often also did work with the Pocatello location of Van Gas, where his path would cross with Shirlene, who lived in Pocatello and also worked for the company. He eventually asked Shirlene and her 3 children to move to Colorado, and as they say, “the rest is history.” They were married on July 6, 1968 and they did eventually end up back in Pocatello where they would remain and build their life together raising their family and running a business.
Chuck spent the remainder of his working years as the owner and operator of Pocatello Gas Service, working in residential HVAC. He also worked with SEICCA where he helped many people, but even on his own, he would help those he knew could not afford his services. Everyone needed to be able to stay warm! In his free time, Chuck loved to fly. He would fly around Pocatello or take trips to see his siblings. He especially liked landing on dirt strips and “accomplished” most of them in the state of Idaho.
He worked far longer than most, but when he finally retired at the age of 82 and was also past his flying years, he enjoyed his machine shop he built, where he could make any tool he wanted. His favorite pastime, clear up until his final days, was making just about anything he could dream up on his plasma cutter. Give him an idea, and he could bring it to creation!
Chuck will be dearly missed by his wife of 53 years, Shirlene, the 3 children he raised, Teresa Iverson, Rick White, and Tim White, son-in-law Tom Iverson, 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, along with many special friends and associates.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the many healthcare providers who cared for Chuck; especially those at Heritage Hospice Care.
Services will be held at Wilks Funeral Home, 211 W. Chubbuck Road, Chubbuck, Idaho, 83202 at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 23, 2022. The family will receive visitation one hour prior to the service. A light luncheon will follow. Military Rites will be provided by the Pocatello Veterans Honor Guard. Inurnment will follow at a later date in the Idaho Veterans Cemetery in Blackfoot, Idaho.
