Charles V. Collins

d. June 22, 2017

Charles V. Collins passed away June 22, 2017 at the Portneuf Medical Center. He was 94 years old. Chuck was born April 15, 1923 in Denver, Colorado to Vivian Lawson Collins and George Nelson Collins. His father passed away when he was three years old. His mother placed him in Denvers Clayton College for Boys; an institution for young boys who didnt have fathers. The purpose was to give them a greater chance for education and development. Chuck became the first student allowed to participate in High School Athletic sports, excelling in basketball and being selected to the Colorado All State High School Basketball Team. Chuck remained at Clayton College until the outbreak of WWII when he enlisted in the US Navy, where he spent the next 20 years and retired as a Chief Petty Officer. Chuck had many adventures in the Navy including the invasion of Okinawa, Kamikaze attacks, being part of the fleet observing the Bikini Atoll Atom Bomb tests, serving aboard the submarine TORSK; which is a memorial in Baltimore and serving aboard the Nuclear Fleet Ballistic Missile Submarines; The Patrick Henry and The George Washington. At one time, he even was aboard when the record was set for time spent under the polar ice cap. After leaving the Navy he moved to Idaho and worked at the INL and Las Vegas Test Site, retiring in 1984. Chuck always thought his greatest accomplishment was his family. He met his wife Ferne, in Denver and they were married on October 19, 1946. He was introduced to her by his sister, Margaret, who was dating Fernes Brother, Bill. Chuck also had a half-sister, Eva, who lived with him for a number of years and a brother who died before he was born. Chuck and Ferne had a son, Chuck A. (Sharon), and a daughter, Chris (Ron) Moore. Ferne passed away in 1985 and Chuck devoted himself to being an extra helping hand and special grandparent to his grandchildren, Ronnie Moore Jr., Chelsea Collins, and Connor Collins and children Chuck and Chris and their spouses. His Grandchildren, Chelsea and Connor, even managed to live with him for some time while attending college so they could have an opportunity to leave home and be on their own away from Mom and Dad. Grandpa Chuck liked going to breakfast with "the boys", who were a loose knit group of his sons friends. He also enjoyed his part time employment at Chucks Fly Fishing Shop also known as the Toy Box. He was very helpful at delivering packages to the post office and other duties like getting lunches or minor repair items, but he especially loved the daily banter about almost every subject imaginable. He was a kind, generous and thoughtful man. He is survived by his son, Chuck and daughter-in-law, Sharon and his daughter, Chris and son-in-law, Ron and his grandchildren, Ron Moore Jr. (spouse, Falina and great-grandson, Garrett) ,and grandchildren, Chelsea Collins, and Connor Collins. He is preceded in death by his parents; and siblings; and his wife, Ferne.
