Calvin W. Hill passed away on January 29, 2018 at the age of 93 in Pocatello, Idaho. He was born September 15, 1924, in Rexburg, Idaho, to George P. and Nora Neibaur Hill. He was the youngest of four children. They moved to Osgood, Idaho, in 1926, then on to Lewisville for six years, finally settling in Roberts in 1937. Each summer Calvin worked with his father on the farm. He also worked for other farmers in the area. Calvin attended school in Osgood and Lewisville and graduated from Roberts High School in 1942. He was active in student government and sports. He was twice on the district all-star basketball team. After high school he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He received training in Colorado, Utah, California, and graduated as a pilot and Second Lieutenant from Marfa Air Force Base in Marfa, Texas. He received additional pilot training in B-17s in Roswell, New Mexico. He was then selected for B-29 training in Alamagordo, New Mexico; Salina, Kansas; and Havana, Cuba. He went overseas to Northwest Field Air Force Base in Guam. He flew 34 combat bombing missions to Japan and was awarded the Air Medal with four clusters and the Distinguished Flying Cross. He was part of the "Show of Strength," and while flying overhead the Battleship Missouri in Tokyo Bay, witnessed the surrender of Japan to the United States in 1945. He was discharged from the Air Corps in January 1946. Returning home to Idaho, he enrolled at the University of Idaho, Southern Branch (ISU), where he met Beverly Ann Cordon, his love for 62+ years. They were married in the Logan Temple in 1947. They moved to Salt Lake City where both attended and graduated from the University of Utah. He was employed as Regional Manager of Urschel Laboratories, retiring from his career while living in Denver, Colorado. During retirement he and Beverly traveled extensively to foreign countries. They also enjoyed their second home in Island Park where they golfed, fished and boated. Calvin loved the out-of-doors. He was a dedicated golfer for many years. In Pocatello, he was very supportive of ISUs growth, attending activities in athletics and music. He was a longtime member of the ISU Bengal Foundation. Calvin was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held many and varied callings. He was a stake auditor for 15 years and a high priest in the Cedar Hills Ward at the time of his death. He was a member of American Legion Post #4. He is survived by his four children; Connie (Gene) Ransom, Island Park, Idaho, Greg (Jeanne) Hill, Centennial, Colorado, Holly (Kevin) Wellard, Layton, Utah, Mitch (Julie) Hill, South Lake, Texas; 15 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; two sisters; one brother; and one grandson. Services will be held at Colonial Funeral Home, 2005 S. 4 th Ave., Pocatello, on Saturday, February 10, 2018 at 11 am. The family will receive friends at Colonial Funeral Home on Friday, February 9, 2018 from 6:00 to 7:30 pm, and for one hour prior to the service on Saturday. Military Honors will follow at Restlawn Memorial Gardens.
