Bonita Weakly

June 10, 1940 — November 29, 2019

Bonita Weakly, 79, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 29, 2019 in Pocatello, Idaho.

Bonita Jean Bernier was born in Kearney, Nebraska on June 10, 1940 to Eugene and Bernice Bernier. She had much older twin sisters who left home when Bonnie was still young.

Bernice and Bonnie moved to Casper Wyoming while Gene graveled looking for work. He never returned home as he passed and was buried in Tooele, Utah.

Bernice worked nights for the railroad, working her way up from cleaning cars to clerk. This left Bonnie Time to entertain herself and learn to be self-sufficient.

Two years after graduating from high school in Chicago, Bonnie met Robert Weakly. They married on her birthday in 1961. The next several years were spent traveling from place to place as Bob worked on his Masters in Chemistry.

Their first child, Edward Dean, was born in 1962 followed by Kenneth Wayne in 1963. In 1966, while working in a hospital in South Dakota, Bonnie helped deliver a beautiful little girl whom they adopted and named Edith Marie. Five months later Dwight Eugene was born. He, at first, was thought to be stillborn so they set him aside as they tended to Bonnie. Thankfully someone noticed he was breathing. Not much hope was held of Dwight living long, but with perseverance and determination, Bonnie proved them wrong. In 1968, little Scott Douglas joined the now large family.

In 1973 Bonnie and Bob divorced. Bob moved to Eastport, Idaho while Bonnie remained in Kellogg, Idaho raising 4 busy boys and Edith.

All five children grew to be hard workers. Eddie had some run ins with the law but Bonnie never gave up on him. He was turning his life around before he died in a car accident in 1994. Kenny, Dwight and Scott all became Eagle Scouts and each have succeeded in different careers. Edith graduated from Gonzaga University, joined the army, and is now a colonel.

In the early 1990's Bonnie moved to Pocatello, Idaho where she completed her Bachelor's Degree in Social Work in 1994. In 1997 she met and married Jesus Mejia. During the next several years Bonnie was very active in her church, Christ Church. She loved to bake and was known for her canned salsa.

In 2002, her mom, Bernice, was diagnosed with cancer. Bonnie moved her to Pocatello and cared for her until she passed the following year.

In 2013, Bonnie and Jess Divorced. Bonnie remained in Pocatello while Jess moved to Colorado.

By this time Bonnie, herself, was in poor health. Scott moved in with her and lovingly cared for her for several years until she suffered a major stroke on November 16, 2019, and passed two weeks later on November 29, 2019.

Bonnie has left behind her four children, eleven grandchildren and eight great-great grandchildren.
