Betty Lou Thompson, 90, passed away quietly in her home on Monday, January 29, 2018. Betty was born on November 17, 1927 in Camrose, Alberta Canada, the daughter of Joseph and Jennie Nell (Snowball) Smith. When Betty was 2 years of age her family left the farm in Camrose and returned to Shelley, Idaho. Betty received her education in Moreland, ID. She completed her education later in life and earned her GED in Pocatello, ID. Betty married Russell Zenos Thompson on January 12, 1946 in Elko, NV. Their first home was in St. Augustine, FL. They also lived in Tabor, ID, Blackfoot, ID, Pocatello, ID, Quansent Point, RI, and Austin, TX. Russ and Betty spent the majority of their life, and raised their children, in Pocatello, Idaho. Betty grew up working on the farm. She later worked several other jobs through out her life. Her longest place of employment was an office job at St. Anthony Hospital. Other places of employment included ISU Vocational School, and Dr. Bacons Affordable Housing. Betty was a member of the Peace Corps during WWII and participated in Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, and Neighborhood Watch programs. She was an active member of TOPS and Card Club. Betty served as a member in the LDS Church and participated in the Unity Church during her life. Betty was a loving mother and homemaker, who cherished her time with her children, family and friends, camping, fishing, traveling, and playing games. She had a passion for gardening and enjoyed baking, quilting, crocheting, and crafting. Survivors include her children, Don Thompson, Cathy Bacon, Cheryl (John) Matzen, Josie (Terry) Grischkowsky, and Christine Thompson; 10 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren. Betty was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Russell Z. Thompson; her parents; two brothers, Jed (Mary) Smith, Floyd (Verla) Smith; two sisters, Edith (Winston) Bingham, Irene (Howard) Elliot; one daughter-in-law, Bonnie Thompson; two sons-in-law, Dwayne Bacon, Larry ONeil; and three grandchildren. Memorial services will be conducted on Saturday, February 3, 2018 at 11 am at Colonial Funeral Home, 2005 S. 4 th Ave. Pocatello, ID, with Pastor Robert Humphries officiating. Inurnment of both, Russell Z. and Betty Thompson, will follow at Mountain View Cemetery, 1520 S. 5 th Ave. Pocatello, ID.
