Betty Terry

Our beloved mother and grandmother, Betty Lou Terry, 85, passed away on Sunday, April 28, 2013 from complications following an illness. She was born in Bancroft, Idaho on March 28, 1928 to Clarence Emmitt Fuger and Violet McElroy Fuger. She was the youngest of three children and the only girl. The family moved to Pocatello when she was still in the second grade. She attended Roosevelt Elementary and spent her junior high years at Irving. She graduated from Pocatello High School in 1946, finished the Vo-Tech cosmetology program and worked as a stylist for three years after graduation. She then spent a year as a drugstore sales clerk after which she made a decision to devote herself to her true calling as wife, homemaker and mother. She met Jay W. Terry when she was a senior in high school while simultaneously attending beauty school training. They were married on June 4, 1948 in Pocatello and had many adventures together while hoping to start their family. She was ecstatic to find herself expecting their first child after five years of marriage and gratefully welcomed their first son, Michael in the fall of 1953. It would take another eight years for this particular blessing to be repeated but it would be spectacular when it finally happened. In February 1961, twin boys Pat and Scott completed the family. Betty and Jay spent many happy hours camping, boating and enjoying family life and the growing musical talents of their sons. Jay traveled for extended periods with his job at Morrison-Knudson and Betty found that she was very self-reliant during his long absences. She happily took on household repairs, vehicle maintenance, yard work and all the tasks that a family requires while keeping an immaculate house and raising their sons. She and the children traveled to many different states and countries while accompanying Jay on his job assignments and had the opportunity to live in Vietnam, El Salvador, Kansas City and North Carolina and visited Europe, Mexico, Malaysia, Thailand, Guatemala, New York, Washington D.C., Portugal and more. In January 1996, Betty was devastated by the death of her husband but carried on with her usual grace and dignity. Their 48 year marriage was filled with adventure and happiness leaving her with many wonderful memories. Betty was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in 1960 and was a member of the Cedar 1st Ward. She took out her endowments in 1996 and was sealed to Jay at the Idaho Falls Temple in November 1999. She also served faithfully in various church positions through the years. She was an admirable example of strength, kindness and love throughout her life. Her wonderful sense of humor served her well in both happy and challenging times and her charisma and sweet nature remained untouched by time. She was clever, quick to laugh and always had a quip to suit the occasion. She was profoundly loved by her family and will be deeply missed. She is survived by her sons, Michael Jay (Connie) of Pocatello, Patrick Leo (Michele) and Scott Emmett, of Salt Lake City, her granddaughters, Jennifer (Jack) Hagen of Nampa, and Kristy (Josh) Heinz of Pocatello, along with great-grandchildren, Jackson, Jenson, T.J. and Neleah. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Violet Fuger, her husband, Jay W. Terry, brothers Clarence Jr. and Bill Fuger and twin great-grandsons Bridger and Weston Heinz. Graveside services for Betty Terry will be held at 2 pm Friday, May 3, 2013 at Restlawn Memorial Gardens. A viewing will be held from 1 pm to 2 pm prior to the services. Arrangements are under the direction of Colonial Funeral Home, 2005 S. 4th Ave. Pocatello, Idaho.
