Bertrand Gary Smith, a long-time resident of Southern Utah, passed away on Thursday afternoon, February 22, 2018 in Pocatello ID. He was 87 years old. Gary was born to Bertrand Carpenter Smith and Idona Lamb Jackson on April 6, 1930 in Cedar City, UT. He was the oldest of three children; including, Luna Diane Smith Mitchell, and Sylvia Smith Bulloch. Garys family was most important to him, as he married Barbara Claire Graham in Salt Lake City on December 28, 1956. Gary met Barb at Zion National Park, as college students, while working during the summer of 1956. Gary and Barb have six children, 23 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren. Gary was affectionately known as "Pop", "Grandpa Duck", "Papa Duck", and "Bert." Gary earned an Associates Degree from the College of Southern Utah, and held various professional assignments in Cedar City, UT, Minneapolis, MN, and Dallas, TX. Prior to college, Gary served in the Army for three years during the Korean War, and in the Central States Mission for the LDS Church between 1953-1955. A special thank you to the staff at Quinn Meadows Rehabilitation Center and Ashley Manor, who served him with compassion until his death. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 10, 2018 at 11 am at the LDS Hurricane 21st Ward Chapel, 320 North 3400 West Hurricane, Utah 84737, with a viewing for one hour prior. Gary will be laid to rest at the Springdale Jolley-Gifford Cemetery, Springdale, Utah.
