Archie Jay Whiting, 95, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 18, 2010, surrounded by family, at Hillcrest Haven Convalescent Center. Arch was born August 10, 1914, in a log cabin at Crystal Idaho. He was the second child of Lemuel Alma (Jay) and Marcina (Ames) Whiting. He had five brothers and six sisters. He was raised in Crystal, Arbon Valley and spent most of his life in Idaho. He married his sweetheart, Ereva (Reva) Williams, November 20, 1936. They were married for 69 years. They were blessed with four daughters, Janice (Bill) Larson, LaVonne (Ken) Larson, Denece (David) Little, Belva (Ronald) Poulsen, and one son, Ronald (Sonia) Whiting. They also have 28 grandchildren, 64 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren. He started their married life in Pocatello working many years with the Union Pacific Railroad. In 1954 they moved to Salmon where he farmed potatoes and worked as a carpenter helping to build many homes and cabins in the Lemhi area. Arch learned to play the fiddle at a very young age and has shared that talent with many of his family and friends. He had the ability to play many musical instruments. He also enjoyed being in the mountains, hunting and fishing. He found great joy in teaching his children about the out of doors. After living in Salmon for 17 years, they returned to Pocatello where Arch again worked for the Union Pacific Railroad. He retired from there in 1976. Arch and Reva enjoyed many years playing at dances and functions with the Old Time Fiddlers. After retiring from the railroad, he began to craft and build several violins and was always glad to fiddle out a lively tune, especially when his grandchildren requested it. He was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He is survived by his daughters and their husbands, 3 brothers, Russell, Calvin, and Boice Whiting, and 2 sisters, Dellcene Hughes and Shirley Rasmussen He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Reva, son Ronald, 4 sisters, Grace Baer, Juanita Wring, Donna Akins, Rachel Hughes, and 2 brothers, Reece and Leon Whiting, and 3 grandsons. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, March 27, 2010 at the Colonial Funeral Home, 2005 S. 4th, Pocatello, Idaho. A viewing will be held Friday, March 26, 2010 from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M., and Saturday, 10:00 to 11:00 A.M. at Colonial Funeral Home. Interment will take place at Mountain View Cemetery. We would like to express gratitude to the caregivers at Ridgewind Assisted Living and Hillcrest Convalescent Center for their kind and compassionate care of our Dad. We love you Daddy and know that you and Mom are making beautiful music together again!
