Anton "Tony" Fix

April 13, 1932 — October 4, 2021

Anton Leo (Tony) Fix of Pocatello, passed away into the arms of his Lord Jesus Christ on Monday, October 4, 2021. He was born April 13, 1932 in Wall Lake, Iowa, to Anton and Theresa Fix. Tony had one brother, Raymond and four sisters, Ceilia, Katheryn, Margaret and Florence.

Tony always had a strong work ethic. He began his career learning the carpentry trade from his father at the age of 14 and really enjoyed it. It was here that his hands-on passion for building things and his attention to detail began. Tony loved music throughout his life beginning with his participation in a 1500-voice choir in Des Moines, Iowa in November 1949 until his 70’s where he participated in choirs at his church. During his high school years, he was also chosen to go to Boys State. He graduated from Wall Lake High School in 1950.

On June 6, 1952, he enlisted in the Navy and served in the Korean War. He served aboard the destroyer USS Taussig as a Torpedoman's Mate 1st class Petty Officer, experiencing combat. After his time at sea, Tony was selected to participate in the Advanced Undersea Weapons School in Key West, Florida. He was honorably discharged in 1960.

After his time in the Navy, Tony returned home, where he then married his first wife, Delores and lived in Ida Grove, Iowa. The couple started a family having three children (Craig, Nancy and Jean). After the service, his first job was running the Culligan water business for his brother who had been badly injured during a work accident. In 1962 he designed and built their family home. Afterward, and until 1969, he worked in the construction business and Midwest Industries. In 1969, Tony relocated his family to Mesa, Arizona where he worked in the residential air conditioning installation business. Soon afterward he joined Motorola as a production mechanic in the then emerging high tech industry. Tony advanced in the organization working for serveral different business divisions in technical operational/engineering type roles. He also helped to establish the Motorola Guadaljara Mexico operations in the mid-70’s.

In 1983 he learned of a new memory chip manufacturer called Micron Technology located in Boise. He secured a job as an assemply operations engineer and then moved there in 1983. He was employee #259 - today Micron has 40,000 employees and is a $21B company.Tony worked tirelessly and was dedicated to ensuring Micron survived those early 'make or break‘ years of the company. Tony possessed a significant passion for making Micron and the production operations successful in terms of quality, productivity and capacity through hard work, problem solving skills, dedication and his entrepruenurel spirit. It was here that he acquired the nick name 'Turbo Tony‘ among his colleagues, as well as all the way to the CEO. He was widely recognized for his contributions of all types during his time there. After a very successful and rewarding career there, he retired from Micron in 1995.

While in Boise he met Joann Sybert, who became his wife in 1990. The couple resided in Boise through 2005. In 2005 Tony and Joann sold their home in Boise and relocated to Pocatello for the closeness to outdoor recreation, cost of living and winter air quality. They purchased a home which they remodeled in 2005/2006. Here they enjoyed admiring the view of the Portneuf Valley from their home in the hills southwest of town.

Before and during Tony’s retirement, he enjoyed fishing, golf, making gadgets in his home workshop, gardening and travel (with frequent trips to the Oregon coast, Arizona, Colorado, Missouri, Iowa and Germany to visit family and freinds).

He was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Community in Pocatello, the American Legion and the Disabled Veterans of America.

Tony was preceded in death by his wife, Joann; his parents; 1 brother; 4 sisters; and step-son, Rick Buchanan.
