Anna Katherine Charlton

September 3, 1923 — August 18, 2019

Anna Katherine Charlton, born in Bruneau, Idaho on September 3, 1923 to Allen and May Jewett, passed away August 18, 2019 in Pocatello at the age of 95. Anna grew up in Three Creek, Idaho with her siblings, Hazel, Harland and Wilma. They rode horses to a one room school. She graduated from high school in Buhl where she lived with her grandmother Conway in order to attend. Ann was married to Harold "Chuck" Charlton for 75 years until his passing in September of 2017.

Their first child, Chuck, was born in Texas where Harold was in military training. After Harold was shipped overseas to serve in World War II, their second child, Penny, was born. Harold served in the European Theater until the War's end. Anna remained in the Twin Falls area, working and raising their children with the loving help of both their families.

When Dad returned from The War, Mom said he "just wanted to go to the mountains"; and she suggested they take a job herding sheep and do just that. Off they went with their two little children, 3 and 2-years-of-age, and herded sheep in the Jarbridge Mountains, living in tents and sheep wagons until Chuck reached school age. They then farmed in the Magic and Wood River Valleys. Mom sometimes cooked for ranch hands and was a marvelous cook. Her cinnamon and hot rolls were especially wonderful. Their daughters Mary and Joy and son Bret were born during these years. They moved to Pocatello for Dad's work as Business Manager of the Laborers Union from 1962 until retirement in 1979. Mom supported Dad in his work and was especially active in the COPE organization. She belonged to Easter Star. They retired to Challis, keeping some horses and a few sheep. During that time, many pack trips, hunting and fishing excursions and gatherings at their home were enjoyed by all the family. They spent their remaining years in Pocatello.

Mom was a wonderful homemaker, wife, mother and grandmother. She could always be counted on tot help with her grandchildren and did so on many occasions. She taught many of them to drive, play pinochle and cook among other fun things. Her family meant so much to her and our family times were the best for her. Mom had a great dry sense of humor and always had a positive attitude. When something bad happened Mom would say, "Things could have been worse" or there were others worse off. She worked hard but always managed to be pretty, even when herding sheep or baling hay.

Anna is survived by: her children, Chuck (Claudia), Penny (Darrell), Mary, Joy, and Bret; grandchildren, Mike, Pat, Luke, Kate, David, Angela, Joshua, Anna, Amanda, Coral, Chantelle and Noah; a sister, Wilma and many nieces and nephews who meant so much to her. There are 14 great-grandchildren who were also the light of her life. She was predeceased by her husband, two grandchildren, Wendy and Mitchel, her parents, a sister and brother.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 25th at Wilks Funeral Home in Chubbuck, Idaho. A viewing will be held one hour prior to services. Graveside services will be held at the Buhl Cemetery on Monday, August 26 at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Shriner Children's Hospital are suggested.

The family wants to thank all of those at the Veterans Home who so lovingly cared for Mom. She said many times how kind you are and how much she appreciated you. You and the other residents certainly were her family too.
