Alan Herman Smith

d. September 27, 2018

Alan Herman Smith passed away peacefully, on Thursday September 27, 2018, at Portneuf Regional Medical Center after a short illness. Dad was born September 11, 1926, in Bancroft, Idaho, to Alfred Herman Smith, and Eleda Bjorkman. He had the unusual distinction of being born in a schoolhouse. The North Canyon School had been purchased by his paternal grandparents, and converted into a house. He was the eldest child, and outlived all of his siblings, Max, his brother, and his two sisters, Eunice and Wilma. Alan married his high school classmate and sweetheart Ada, in the Logan LDS Temple on July 2, 1945, while home on furlough, having completed basic training in California and prior to being deployed overseas to the Philippines, Korea, and China. At the end of the war, Alan was one of two soldiers selected to be an honor guard for General Dwight D. Eisenhower, who was visiting Japan. Ada passed away on August 24, 2018. Dad is survived by son Terrell, Boise, son Kurttis (Suzan) McCammon; 5 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ada; his parents; siblings; a son, Bradley Jones Smith; and a grandson, Nolan Smith. Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 5, 2018 at 12 Noon at the LDS Chesterfield Ward Building, 1001 E. Stalker Rd. (Corner of Nipper and Stalker Roads) Chesterfield, ID 83217. Viewings will also be at the church on Thursday, October 4 from 6-8pm as well as Friday from 10:30-11:30 am prior to the services. Burial, with Military Honors, will follow at the Chesterfield Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family would encourage donations to the Idaho School Boards Association Scholarship Fund in Alan Smiths name. Alan served as Executive Director of the ISBA for over 30 years. Dads motto: "Remember The Children."
